Texas A&M-Kingsville Students Come Home Winners From Press Competition

KINGSVILLE (March 31, 2022) — Staff members of The South Texan, the student newspaper at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, came home from the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association big winners with 22 awards in all. There were 1,800 entries in the pre-published competition with 239 students from 34 schools competing the live contest.

As a group, The South Texan received first place in Overall Newspaper Design and Honorable Mention for Overall Website Excellence and Overall Website Design.

Individual winners include:

Aryssa Enriquez from Mission: first and second place in breaking news and third place in general news story;

Ronni Reyna from Victoria: first place in feature story, general news multimedia story, general news video story and multimedia slide show; second place in podcast; and third place in special print edition and live print news writing;

Rae Martinez from La Feria: first place in general news multimedia story, multimedia slide show and general news audio story; third place in general news video story; and honorable mention in Spanish news writing and TV announcing Spanish in the live contest;

Susan Cortez from San Benito: first place in general news multimedia story, general news video story and third place in general news video story;

Luis Briseno from Kingsville: first place in general news multimedia story;

Emeri Drewery from Edinburg: first place in general news video story;

Makaylah Chavez from McAllen: second place in in-depth reporting;

Joshua Mendez from Cypress: second place in podcast and third place in general news video story;

Tiffany Hinojosa from Corpus Christi: second place in podcast;

Amanda DeFrees from San Antonio: second place in general news audio story;

Gabriella Mastroianni from Corpus Christi: third place in special print edition and critical review;

Erik Estrada from San Antonio: first place in live video news in the live contest and third place in general news video story;

Dylan Sanchez from Houston: third place in sports column.
