Texas A&M University-Kingsville communications professor Dr. Manuel Flores was recently selected as the 2019 Dr. Joe Bernal Community Service Honoree.

The award is given to a member of the community in Texas who has provided exemplary support and promotion in the areas of bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism, according to the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) executive board.

TABE is a state non-profit organization that focuses on advocating for high-quality bilingual education for all students in Texas. It offers professional development through engaging institutes and interactive conference sessions that enhance the support to bilingual educators, community leaders and parents.

Flores, who is also the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, was nominated for his work that has supported Tejano music, culture and heritage language development in his community. The nomination was then accepted and approved by the TABE executive board.

Flores will be recognized along with other honorees at the 2019 TABE Conference: The Power of B3 at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
