New Music Course Sends Students to Study Abroad in Austria

KINGSVILLE (August 9, 2016) — In June, Texas A&M University- Kingsville students traveled to one of the world’s great musical centers: Vienna, Austria, a city that has fostered some of the most celebrated and beloved composers of Western classical music.

The trip was part of a new course titled “Music and Culture of Vienna,” created by Dr. Joseph Jones to provide students with an arts-centered study abroad opportunity. An assistant professor of musicology in the Department of Music, Jones previously lived in Vienna for two years and worked as a researcher in Germany and Austria.

During their fourteen-night stay in Vienna, the students walked in the footsteps of composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Mahler, while exploring the Austrian capital’s rich history and artistic culture. The group met daily for on-site discussions, and their many excursions included visits to art galleries, composer residences and world-class music venues.

The group attended a performance of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro at the State Opera where members of the Vienna Philharmonic comprising the orchestra. The 14 students resided at an international hostel and met travelers from around the world. Several students also took advantage of the opportunity to travel on their free days, visiting cities such as Salzburg, Bratislava and Venice by train.

This year’s participants included Ashley Acosta, Julio Barrera, Armand Cavazos, Kevin Cepeda, Veronica Graham, Adrienne Harborth, Michelle Hernandez, Jonathon Newell, Hector Ramirez, Carissa Reyes, George Salinas, Jace Schmidt, Amanda VanZandt and Selena Zarate.

Jones plans to offer the Vienna program on an annual basis. It will also open to non-music majors, faculty, staff and community members. Those interested in learning more about the program may contact Dr. Jones at joseph.jones@tamuk.edu.
