The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Department of Music will perform a one-act opera in celebration of the holiday season beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 1 in Jones Auditorium. Admission is $5 for the general public and free for A&M-Kingsville students and children 18 years-old and under.

Composed by Gian Carlo Menotti, Amahl and the Night Visitors recounts the tale of Amahl and his mother, who are visited by three kings who are on their way to find the child king. The kings share the news of the arrival of the child king, showing Amahl and his mother the rich gifts they are taking to him. When Amahl’s mother is caught stealing from the kings, they explain that the king they seek will need only love to rule his kingdom and tell the mother she may keep her stolen loot, but she returns it. Amahl, who previously required a crutch to walk, offers his crutch as a gift to the child king. When he gives up the crutch, he finds his disability has been healed and he can now walk normally. Inspired by this development, Amahl leaves to join the three kings on the rest of their journey.

This performance is funded by a community engagement grant, and features community members, university personnel and a chamber orchestra. For more information, call Dr. Melinda Brou at 361-593-2824.
