Dr. Brenda Melendy

Professor of History

Displaced California native who regrets the lack of mountains, trees, and a proper ocean in South Texas, but who has nevertheless grown to love the birds, the butterflies, the quiet.  I lay claim to a mere two degrees of separation from Barack Obama (he and I attended the same high school in Honolulu) and from the producer of the Austin Powers movies (he lived upstairs from me at my Stanford freshman dorm).  If I can’t be swimming in the Hawaiian Pacific, I’d rather be walking in the Swiss Alps. The serious stuff: earned my PhD in European Social and Cultural History at University of California, Santa Cruz, with a focus on Modern Germany and a sub-field in African history.  My research areas include German Expellees since 1945, Holocaust and Genocide, and Commemoration and Memory.  I’ve lived in divided Berlin and in Switzerland, and so speak at least two varieties of German as well as French (and a little Spanish, and what I call menu-Italian—the important stuff).  My hobbies?  Reading and travel, of course!
