Dear student body,
I will no longer reign as your editor-in-chief of The South Texan student newspaper at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. My duties and responsibilities at the student newspaper are almost complete. I have gained a tremendous amount of experience both here at TAMUK as a Javelina and at The South Texan as a reporter, photographer, copy editor, page designer and as editor-in-chief.
While working at The South Texan I learned how to improve my writing and design skills, how to work well with co-workers, meet deadlines and work under a great deal of pressure.
I have spent many long hours at The South Texan since the first time I stepped into our newsroom and it has not been easy. I have run errands, which some may have included running to the Javelina Café to get Frito pies for editors. I have covered events hosted by various departments and written several reviews, which some did not agree on. I have taken photos for sports, entertainment, features and news. I have laughed and I have cried and most of all – I have enjoyed every minute of it.
Sometimes our student newspaper gets overlooked but it is when our TAMUK community reaches out to us by congratulating or condoning us by phone, E-mail or in person that truly makes it all while.
It does not matter to us if our readers agree or disagree on a given situation. All that matters to us is that they read something in our student newspaper and felt something.
As journalists, it is our job to report, write and inform our readers about news that affects our everyday lives.
As the majority of our staff on The South Texan gets ready to walk the stage this May and August, we look back with all the memories, experiences and friends we have met along the way.
So as my finale farewell I would like to dedicate this last issue of the semester to those who have been there for me the most: my parents, John and Toni Garcia; my sister, Jenny; my boyfriend, Ben; my grandparents; my uncles and aunties; and all of my primos.
I would like to thank my advisor, Manuel Flores, Ph.D. and most of all my staff for working by my side and being there for me when I needed you the most. I love each and every one of you. I am going to miss you dearly.. .
