CORPUS CHRISTI -Mariachi Javelina was one of several mariachi groups from across Texas to open for Mexico’s Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Saturday during the Coastal Bend Area Mariachi Festival.
Mariachi Vargas is celebrating its 110th year anniversary and performed in front of a sold out crowd at the Selena Bayfront Auditorium.
The event produced by Muñoz Public Relations, LLC was planned in conjunction with Coastal Bend College. Juan Jose Sanchez, Instructor at Coastal Bend College has been instrumental in organizing this event known as “Dia Del Mariachi.”
The event in its sixth year of production finally reached a level of monumental proportions. Participating in the competition were schools from all over the state of Texas and even from a school in New Mexico. The students participated in this three day event which included a vocal competition, group competition, and workshops.
Texas A&M University Kingsville’s Mariachi Javelina along with Mariachi Azucenas out of McAllen worked with South Texas students Saturday, March 8 and also performed in the evening concert—a highlight of the evening for many of the local residents.
