Gabriel Geyne was announced as the new Student Government Association president last Friday, April 25 in elections held on the university’s MyGroups website.
The elections were held over a two-day period, from noon on April 23 through noon on April 25.
“First of all, I’m really proud of the university. I fit in here and it’s home. I’m proud to be a Javelina,” Geyne said on becoming the new SGA president. “I’m proud to represent the student body.”
Geyne, a senior mechanical engineering major from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, transferred to A&M-Kingsville from Texas A&M-International where he was a pre-engineering student.
He has been involved in SGA for a year as a senator-at-large and a member of the external affairs committee.
Geyne stated three main goals he wants to accomplish during his time as SGA president.
“I want to create strong communication between the student body, the faculty and the community,” Geyne said. “I also want to create unity between the student body, faculty and community.”
“I hope to make SGA pro-active, organized, more visible and more student friendly,” Geyne said on his third goal. “We can all work together to make this university amazing.
TAMUK students currently enrolled were eligible to vote using TAMUK’s online organization networking site, MyGroups at mygroups.tamuk.edu.
“Every position in Student Government was available for students to run for. However, the Election Committee upheld that certain positions were open only to students who had been Senators for at least two semesters,” counseling and guidance graduate and 2007-2008 SGA Student Body President, Thomas Bingham said.
The Internal Affairs Committee headed by Senator Pro-Tempore and Internal Affairs Committee Chair Jinnelle Aguilar oversaw the ballots and voting process.
“Elections were originally scheduled for April 14-18, however due to an appeal from the SGA President regarding the qualifications for running for President and Vice President, elections were frozen and had to be done last minute in order to have the President and Vice President inducted at our Gala,” Aguilar said.
“No position was contested, so all students will hold the position that they applied for,” Bingham said.
Executive Seats such as President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer; and Senator Positions were available positions.
As a result from the election, SGA has at least one representative from every seat or position available.
“This is a definite improvement as the Student Government Association of 2007-2008 saw a dramatic decrease in membership,” Aguilar said. “Last year, many seats were vacant and many colleges did not have any representation within the Student Government.”
Applications are available all year for Senator positions in the SGA office and in the Office of Student Activities. For more information regarding the 2008-2009 SGA year, contact Gabriel Geyne, new Student Body President at 361-593-3610.
