Steven Rhyan Staten, 24, a senior mechanical engineering student of Texas A&M University-Kingsville moves some of his family's belongings from his home at the campus student family apartments along Engineering Ave. University officials stated they are in the process of setting up a new residence hall on campus where the family apartments are located |
In order to make room for the new for the new residence hall at Texas A&M-Kingsville, residents currently living in the university’s family housing apartments are having to vacate their living quarters.
On campus since 1959, the family housing apartments will be replaced by a new residence hall beginning 2009.
That will force 33 students to change living arrangements for the next school year.
According to an e-mail from Crystal Saavedra, a resident of the housing apartments, residents were not informed about the situation until March 14 and have until June to vacate.
In an article from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Teresa Remelius, vice president of student affairs, pointed out that legally the university could have given the residents only 30 days to vacate the apartments, but instead gave them two and a half months.
Remelius also mentioned that the university has been in contact with area apartment complexes to help those students affected find a new place to live.
The university is relying on the new residence hall to house the increase of students expected next fall.
The university has accepted 2, 033 students for the 2009 fall semester and are planning to have more than 8, 000 students by 2012.
The number of students who live on campus has improved over the past year.
Last spring, 920 students lived on campus while approximately 1, 200 students are living on campus this spring semester..
