About the Assistant Vice President for Special Programs

Ms. Gonzalez
Mary L. Gonzalez became assistant vice president for Special Programs in 2003. Gonzalez previously served as director of Special Programs.
As one of the most complex departments on campus, Special Programs includes Student Support Services, Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, Upward Bound, Math & Science Upward Bound, High School Equivalency Program, College Exploration Program (CEP) and College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). Between instructors, mentors, tutors and staff, the department has more than 65 personnel and several million dollars in federal resources.
Gonzalez received her bachelor’s degree in business administration management in 1989, her bachelor’s in business administration finance in 1990 and her master of science in psychology in 1997, all at Texas A&M-Kingsville. She has taken the course work in 1997 to pursue the Licensed Professional Counselor credential in the state of Texas. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in educational human resources through Texas A&M University.
In addition to serving as director of McNair, Gonzalez also was assistant director of special programs’ TRIO programs. She has served at the university since 1987, starting as a part-time grader. She later assisted with the CEP program before coordinating the Student Support Services program. In 1995 she was appointed to direct the Ronald E. McNair program.
