SPECIAL PROGRAMS OBTAINS TWO-MILLION DOLLAR GRANT
The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville has received funding for a 5-year period. The slightly over 2 million dollar grant is funded by the Department of Education through the Office of Migrant Education. The TAMUK HEP is designed to serve the migrant and seasonal farm worker population, predominantly from the Coastal Bend and lower Rio Grande Valley areas. The program provides twelve weeks of GED classes in five content areas, provides academic and vocational counseling, and academically prepares students to acquire the equivalency of a high school diploma. The prime objectives of the HEP are to break the migratory lifestyle through education and returning them to the work force or transition them into post-secondary education.
JAVELINA WELCOME ORIENTATION BRINGS STUDENTS TOGETHER FOR FUN AND WORKSHOPS
Javelina Welcome begins on Friday, August 19 and was designed to provide a smooth transition for the new students as they join the Javelina Family. • The Student Support Services (SSS) grant was refunded for four years and $1.0 million and assists over 240 students per year.
  • Wearing extended wear hard or soft contact lenses for too long a period can cause changes in the shape and clarity of the cornea. Once someone stops, blurred and fluctuating vision can last for one to four weeks. Until the corneal dislocation stops, the patient can not get an accurate measurement for glasses. People with extended wear hard or soft lenses should change their wearing schedule to daily wear and remove lenses each night. A tip from Health Services.
  • The Student Affairs website (www.tamuk.edu/sass) is packed with information. You are invited to tour the website and offer your comments to Student Affairs.
  • The Memorial Student Union made 3,471 reservations through June 30. During the same time period last year, MSU made 2,711 reservations. That’s an increase of 28%. The most popular room is the Alumni Room of Honor which represents 11% of all reservations.
  • One of TAMUK's local sororities is getting national attention. Psi Theta Upsilon has been meeting with representatives from national sororities to explore opportunities for affiliation with a nationally recognized Panhellenic sorority. This is exciting news as the campus looks forward to welcoming the formation of new national sorority in the coming school year.
  • Plans are underway this fall for hosting a South Texas Career Services Summit. The summit will address issues related to the employment climate of South Texas, business and industry growth, “planting seeds” for internship sites and similar discussion topics relating to career development and job placement. This is being initiated by TAMUK's Career Services Center.
  • Financial Aid has initiated "Loans by Web," which is an internet based loan acceptance product from a Guarantee Agency. This makes the loan process so much easier and gets the students to do an online counseling session for default aversion.
