WORD FROM THE FOUNDER

Ricardo Contreras Jr.

My name is Ricardo Contreras Jr. I am a Senior Mechanical Engineering major from Alice, Texas. I graduated from Alice High School in 1999, and yes I am one of the old guys in the club. I would really like to see a club on campus unite more of the student body. This is the main reason this club was formed; in hopes of spreading our extensive knowledge of fishing and the great outdoors while uniting the students.  I would first like to welcome everyone to the website and hopefully to the club. As a child growing up I was never thoroughly introduced to the wonderful sport of fishing. I grew up playing football, basketball and the normal sports most kids play. As I became older my friends told me about fishing. After hearing countless stories and viewing several pictures I developed a genuine interest. I began fishing consistently in high school and it followed me all through college. When I first transferred to TAMUK, for the Fall semester of 2003, I was active in several organizations; but regardless of how active I was, I never became satisfied with the accomplishments. I finally decided to start a club that would fulfill my passion for the outdoors. After seeking advice from several friends and professors and filling out all the necessary paperwork, it was final. The TAMUK ANGLERS were born.

Now after four years of being active we have established ourselves as a reputable organization on campus. Participating in several campus wide events, hosting events of our own and joining the community for service projects, this club is now ready to shine. As this new website will show, we excel in everything we do and would love for more of the campus community to join in.  Please feel free to send comments and suggestions to the email listed on the "Contact Us" page.

Good Luck Fishing!!

ADVISOR- Dr. William A. Heenan

Since taking on the role of advisor for the TAMUK Anglers in the spring of 06' Dr. Heenan has made countless efforts to better our organization.  Under his wing we have learned about how the system works and we have been able to use this knowledge in making our club a successful operation.  Here's a little about Dr. Heenan.

Dr. Heenan came to the university in 1977 and has been the Chair of the Chemical and Natural Gas Engineering department since 1992. From 1980 to 1982, he worked as a staff engineer and process control group leader for the Celanese Chemical Corporation in Bishop, Texas. He returned to the university in 1982 and has remained ever since. He also has taught at the University of Houston, at the Houston and Victoria campuses, and the University of Puerto Rico.

PRESIDENT- ANDREW MASON

I grew up near the water in Corpus Christi, Texas and as a kid I fished whenever I got the chance and anywhere and everywhere I could be dropped off. I came to TAMUK in the fall of 2004 after graduating from Odem High School and am working on my degree in mechanical engineering. Catch and release shark fishing is my primary interest. The thrill of knowing that you could have something bigger than you on the other end of the line is awesome! The catching however is not the only good part of fishing. Getting out of the hectic everyday environment and being able to get in touch with nature is the best therapy; it helps to forget about the physics test you just studied your heart out for or the calculus test that drove you crazy all week. The TAMUK Anglers Extreme Fishing Club offers all the opportunities to take part in such activities. Through this club, I have had the chance to serve the community as well as satisfy my addiction to the outdoors. It is great to be a part of such an organization and I would like to take this opportunity to invite all TAMUK staff, faculty, alumni, and students to join us to get some lines wet.

Co-Founder- David Cardona (Animal)

My name is David Cardona, also known as ANIMAL to many. I am a senior here at TAMUK finishing up a Music Education Degree. It is a great privilege to say that I am one of the original and founding members of the TAMUK Angler Fishing Club. With the help of other students on campus that share a deep passion for fishing we were able to form this great club. This club has brought students who fish many areas all around Texas together as one group and we are able to share experiences, tips and as well as time on the water. I myself am a saltwater fisherman mainly fishing in the surf for reds, trout, jacks and monster sharks down Padre Island National Seashore.  My goal as Vice-President is to do my part to help carry out the purpose of this organization, which is to unite many while preaching through practicing conservation.  I look forward to yet another successful year as a TAMUK Angler and invite everyone to join us and come feed their passion of fishing.

  Secretary- Richard Lane III

My name is Richard Lane, some know me as Trey, and I am from Arlington, TX.  I came to Kingsville to study Mechanical Engineering and enjoy some of the best fishing that Texas has to offer.  I have been fishing for as long as I can remember.  I started out fishing in a small creek in my neighborhood with some other kids on the block.  I would take my dads nice fishing equipment and use it to catch small blue gills.  It wasn't long after that when I found my way to the Texas Gulf Coast.  I have spent a lot of time catching trout, reds, and other fish out of East Matagorda Bay.  When it was time for me to go to college I knew I had to be close to a place with good fishing so I chose TAMUK because of its close proximity to Baffin Bay and Padre Island.  Fishing always has and always will be one of my favorite things to do.
