A&M-Kingsville night at Aviators Stadium
Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 4, as Texas A&M University-Kingsville Night at the Coastal Bend Aviators game in Robstown. We hope that last year’s rowdy crowd and others will purchase discount tickets and represent the university at this exciting event.

Tickets will be $5 each and another announcement will be made when they will go on sale.

Game time is 7:05 p.m., but the Aviators have scheduled a car show in the parking lot for that evening, so arrive early to see the show.

Also, the Aviators have designated every Saturday as Tailgate Party Night so go even earlier, take your barbecue pit and your ice chest and start the party right. As evidenced from the pre-football game activities, Javelinas do know how to tailgate.

Officials from the Aviators also have said they would set up tables in the concourse area for any of our departments that would like to set up a booth or display. If you are interested in setting up a booth, please call Julie Navejar at extension 2590 no later than Friday, May 20.

With these exciting additions, A&M-Kingsville Night is sure to be fun for everyone, so make plans to attend.

For more information call Julie at 2590.

On to the Next Level of Excellence

Rumaldo Z. Juárez, President

Wednesday, our university received a very positive review from the SACS team who conducted the on-site visit to our campus. I want to congratulate and thank each of you for the role you played in preparing for this visit during the last four and one-half years. It was very evident that we had the “right people on the bus!” The leadership displayed by our faculty and staff was excellent, and it made this successful outcome possible.

These few words hardly seem adequate to express my appreciation to all of you for the many hours of hard work and dedication that you invested in this process. Obviously these investments have paid off big time, and you should take great pride in this accomplishment.

While we will not receive final word about our re-accreditation until December, we are confident that we will successfully address the recommendations that we received. The glowing and complimentary remarks by our SACS site visitors certainly captured what we are capable of doing, what we are, and what we can become in reaching our next level of excellence. The recommendations we received are very do-able and realistic, and they will help us get to this next level.

Finally, the logistical planning for this visit was awesome, our documentation was superb and best of all, we demonstrated EXCELLENCE!

CONGRATULATIONS – and again, thank you – for the very successful outcome that resulted from our SACS on-site visit!

It’s all About the Students!

Gracias!

Buc Days Wild Hog Cookoff

Members of A&M-Kingsville’s Angler Club represented the Javelinas at the Wild Hog cook-off at yesterday’s Buc Days BBQ Challenge.  According to unofficial results, A&M-Kingsville beat A&M-Corpus Christi’s team by a respectable margin and Del Mar went home early.  None of the exhausted cooks woke early enough to hear the official results on this morning’s K-99 radio show. The winning team was determined patrons tasting samples who voted by placing dollar bills into a collection bottle.  Funds generated went to the Buc Days scholarship fund to enhance scholarships at each of the participating schools.

Remembering John Paul II

Many members of the university community joined the world in mourning the recent passing of Pope John Paul II. His passing was especially saddening to one member of the community, Steven Lukefahr, animal science professor.

Lukefahr was in Rome in 1984 for the Third World Rabbit Congress and was part of a delegation that had an audience with the Pope. He was not yet employed at A&M-Kingsville, but worked for Heifer Project International (HPI) and was stationed in Cameroon, West Africa

After the exciting event, Lukefahr reported about it to his superiors at HPI. He found that report in recent days and shared it with members of the World Rabbit Science Association (WRSA) along with this message:

“I hope that you enjoyed reading this excerpt from my old report. It was a rare experience to meet with the Pope. His message continues to inspire my work today.”

Attached is Lukefahr’s report on this special event.

“For me, the personal highlight of the rabbit congress did not occur in the Palazzo dei Congressi, but rather in Vatican City. During the morning sessions on April 7, the congress officials received an invitation by telephone from the office of Pope John Paul II to arrive in Vatican City in four hours to pay him a visit. About one hundred of the congressional participants entered the papal palace at the expected time and we were ushered to a designated seating area. I would guess that there were approximately one thousand people altogether in the palace.

The enormous chamber was filled with the celestial sounds of organ music and Gregorian chants from assembled clerical leaders seated to the front. I think everyone’s hearts were pounding with excitement as we leapt to our feet and strongly applauded as the Pope quite some time later walked across the stage floor to be seated in a huge decorative white chair in the center. After several minutes of applause and cheering, we were kindly urged to be seated. The Pope then held a brief prayer, followed by reading a speech from a large scroll.

For nearly one full hour, the Pope spoke in Italian to the assembly. During this time, in approximate 10-minute intervals, a clustered group would joyously leap up in roaring applause while cheering “Mi Papa – Mi Papa,” as the Pope had graciously accepted to their awaited request to soon hold Sunday mass at their church. Before long, it seemed as though the hearts of all were radiating with love for this very personable, caring and special man.

After all this, the Pope changed to English, concluding his speech by addressing the WRSA:

‘To the 3rd World Rabbit Congress, members of the World Rabbit Science Association, I am much interested in your efforts as scientists in providing more food to feed the hungry world… May God bless you, your families, and your mission in achieving this vital human goal.’

Once our own applause had subsided, the Pope then advanced to the central aisle of the palace and spent over half an hour in shaking our hands and offering further blessings and personal greetings throughout the assembly. When he came to our section, Dr. John Owen (secretary for rabbit in developing countries) received the Pope on the WRSA’s behalf.”
