Music Faculty Present Recital at Texas A&M University-Kingsville
Dr. Jack Burt, associate professor of trumpet, and Jason Kwak, assistant professor of piano, will present a faculty recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, in the Frank C. Smith Recital Hall in the Bellamah Music Building. The recital will feature the music of Tartini, Enescu, Höhne, Broughton, Barber and Ewazen. Admission is free. Read more»

Hispanic Enrollment a 'Half-Full Glass,' President Says
The president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, in San Antonio Monday to help kick off a celebration of Hispanic heritage at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC), said a 60,000-student increase in Hispanic enrollment at Texas public universities over an eight-year period shows “the glass is half full and we are seeing progress.” But he cautioned that “we must not let budgetary challenges divert us from what we need to do.” Read more»

Three Former Students Named
Distinguished Alumni at Texas A&M University-Kingsville

A military general in Iraq, a newspaper columnist in San Antonio and a retired oil and gas company president in Houston may seem to have little in common, but their successes in life prove that education and hard work can lead to something really big. That’s why the Javelina Alumni Association has selected these three people as Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Distinguished Alumni for 2003: Lieutenant General Ricardo S. Sanchez (1973), Carlos Guerra (1969) and Merle C. Muckleroy (1958). Read more»

Project LIBERTY Update
Assistant Director Val Ramirez and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Dalton Bigbee signed the Project Definition Document (PDD) for Project LIBERTY on September 2. The PDD defines the scope of the Banner implementation and sets goals and milestones for individual departments as well as for the campus as a whole.
Suson Receives Olan Kruse Science Faculty Award at Texas A&M University-Kingsville for Second Time
Dr. Daniel Suson, professor and chair of the physics/geosciences department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, has received the Olan Kruse Science Faculty Award given through the College of Arts and Sciences. This is the second time he has received the honor; he first was recognized in 1996. Read more»

Texas A&M University-Kingsville Alumnus Becomes New Director of International Admission/Student Services
Alberto Salinas has been appointed director of international admission and international student services at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He previously served as associate director of the office and also spent two years as an admissions/international evaluation specialist.

Texas A&M University-Kingsville Introduces
Director of Development

Charlotte Michaelson is the director of development at Texas A&M University-Kingsville effective September 1. She will be a part of the Division of Institutional Advancement and will be responsible for the university’s annual fund campaign, special events planning and other development efforts. Read more»

Javelinas Awaiting First Home Game
The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team will be idle this weekend as it awaits its home opener Sept. 20 with Nicholls (La.) State in Javelina Stadium.

Freshmen Learn Traditions, Spirit at Convocation
Texas A&M University-Kingsville will host a freshman convocation at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, to welcome new students to the campus and to college life. Gladys Hines, executive director of College I, is chair of the convocation committee. She said education experts agree that universities need to establish more rituals and traditions in order to keep students involved, committed and enrolled. Read more»

Texas A&M-Kingsville will be well-represented during Del Mar College’s Hispanic Heritage celebration. Former professor Dr. Rolando R. Hinojosa-Smith will give a lecture at noon Wednesday, September 17 in the Retama Room. The Retama Room is on the second floor of the Harvin Student Center on Del Mar’s East Campus. Tickets are $5 for the general public.
Hinojosa-Smith taught at Texas A&I and other universities before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. He is a noted author and educator.
Staff member and former student Homero S. Vera will discuss his magazine, El Mesteño, at 10 a.m. Monday, September 22, also in the Retama Room.
Vera’s magazine covers Mexican-American culture and history in South Texas and northern Mexico. In addition to serving as editor and publisher of the magazine, he is a field historian for the South Texas Archives at A&M-Kingsville.

Texas A&M-Kingsville has an informational kiosk located at the Kingsville Convention and Visitors Bureau. The kiosk will be used to post information about events on campus and to make visitors aware of the campus. Dr. Wayne Gunn, professor emeritus of language and literature, is leading this new effort.

The staff at Life Services and Wellness has planned a benefit barbecue for Elma Saldaña, front desk clerk at the center. She was involved in a serious accident and is undergoing treatment in Houston. All funds raised will be used to make her home handicapped accessible.

Plates will be $5 a piece. Plates include a half-quarter chicken, rice, beans and trimmings. The barbecue will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, October 5 at the KC Hall #3389, 320 E. Gen. Cavazos Blvd.

Dr. Indra K. Reddy, candidate for dean of the School of Pharmacy, will be on campus next week. He is a professor of pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

The campus community is invited to meet Dr. Reddy during an open forum at 2:15 p.m. Monday, September 15 in the Founders Room. Please mark your calendars to come and meet Dr. Reddy.
