PRIDE OF SOUTH TEXAS BEGINS NEW SEASON

KINGSVILLE (September 21, 1998) -- Fall is not just football and northers; it's also Jalisco, Mambo, color guard, twirlers and drum majors. In other words, it's marching band season. Texas A&M University-Kingsville's marching band, The Pride of South Texas, begins its performance season at the Sept. 26 Harding University football game with Bryan Herring as the new director. Herring, with a Master of Music and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, has a 20 year teaching career.

"This promises to be a very exciting and rewarding season," Herring said. "We have one of the most exciting university marching bands in America. The reputation of the band has earned its members numerous invitations to perform throughout Texas."

The band will perform in several exhibitions this year in addition to football games. The Pride of South Texas will perform at the Brownsville Marching Contest on October 3. On Oct. 6, The Pride of South Texas will be in the halftime showcase at the Corpus Christi Showcase of Bands high school band competition as the guest college band.

This year marks the band's first ever performance at the prestigious Bands of America Marching contest Oct. 10 in San Antonio's Alamodome before the finest high school bands in the United States.

The Pride of South Texas will perform at the University Interscholastic League Region XIV Marching Contest in Robstown on Oct. 17, and at the U.I.L. Area Marching contest in Calallen on Oct. 24.

"The Pride of South Texas, one of the university's most visible organizations, is a product of the combined efforts of the Texas A&M-Kingsville music department, one of the finest music faculties in the nation," Herring said.
