HISPANIC HERITAGE ACTIVITIES CONTINUE

WITH MARIACHI, BALLET PERFORMANCES



KINGSVILLE (Sept. 24, 1998) -- The Mariachi Javelina and Ballet Folklorico of Texas A&M University-Kingsville will do their part for the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a special performance at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in ballroom A of the Student Union Building. Admission is free.

The performance of the Mariachi Javelina features "Jalisco," a song adopted many years ago by The Pride of South Texas Band as an unofficial school song.

The mariachi group also will perform other favorites, including "Si Nos Dejan," "Nunca Voy Olvidarte," "Amor Eterno" and "El Rey."

Diana Tiffany, assistant professor of music, is the faculty advisor of Mariachi Javelina and Gregorio Cavazos is the student director.

The Ballet Folklorico, under the direction of Joe Silguero, will dance to music from the Mexican states of Jalisco, Vera Cruz, Yucatan and Guadalajara, including "Jarabe Tapatio," "La Negra," "La Jarocha" and "Mujeres que se Pintan."

Patricia Cypher, language and literature lecturer, is the faculty advisor for the Ballet Folklorico.
