HOMECOMING '98 IS A ROYAL AFFAIR

WITH WEEK-LONG ACTIVITIES



KINGSVILLE (Oct. 7, 1998) -- A week of events planned by the Javelina Alumni Association and the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Office of Student Activities will keep former and present Javelinas busy Saturday, Oct. 17, through Saturday, Oct. 24.

The calendar of events begins with the annual mud volleyball tournament at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in Mesquite Grove. Competitors from student organizations on campus challenge each other in a tournament where playing dirty is the object of the game.

Internationally-known comedian Carlos Mencia continues Homecoming week activities as he performs live in at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at Jones Auditorium. Tickets for the general public are $5. Students are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased from the student activities office on the third floor of the Student Union Building.

Students may vote for Homecoming king and queen from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Student Union Building.

University Boulevard will be closed on campus Wednesday, Oct. 21, for the fall carnival from 4 to 11 p.m. Food and game booths greet those attending. A band, to be announced later, will provide music.

The movie "Six Days, Seven Nights" will be shown at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in room 100 of the Biology Earth Sciences Building Thursday, Oct. 22.

Homecoming gets into full swing Friday, Oct. 23, with a parade around campus beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at Mesquite Grove where a barbecue will be served until 7 p.m. Barbecue plates are $5.25. The traditional bonfire and pep rally will unfold at 7:30 p.m., also in Mesquite Grove.

Alumni activities are centered around the Royal Court Ball from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 23, in ballrooms A and B in the Student Union Building. Eddie Galvan and his band will perform their big band sound.

Pre-sale tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple. At the door, tickets are $20 per person of $30 per couple.

At the ball, royal court members including former Lantana duchesses and queens and Homecoming queens will be honored. The Distinguished Alumnus, attorney Albert P. Huerta, will be presented and Marc Cisneros, Texas A&M-Kingsville's new president, will be introduced.

Saturday's alumni events begin early with the Fourth Annual Javelina Alumni Golf Tournament which tees off at 7:30 a.m. at the L.E. Ramey Golf Course in Kingsville. The tournament, sponsored by the ROTC, will be limited to the first 100 golfers. The entry fee is $35, which includes fees, cart, food and beverages. To register call Capt. The communications and theatre arts department will sponsor five performances of Big Foot and the Bodacious Beaver Babes in Jones Auditorium. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22-23 and 30 and at midnight Oct. 24 and 31.

The 1998 Homecoming king and queen will be crowned during halftime festivities at the

Javelina football game Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Texas A&M-Kingsville takes on the Buffalos of West Texas A&M University.
