TAMUK HISTORY SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
KINGSVILLE (October 8, 1998) -- The history department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville has awarded five history students with scholarships for the Fall 1998 semester. Recipients were selected based on outstanding academic performance.
Junior Devin Odvody from Corpus Christi received the Mildred Chiuminatto Scholarship, named for the retired Kleberg bank employee and avid historian who established the fund in 1992. Each semester the scholarship is awarded to the department's highest-ranking undergraduate student majoring or minoring in history. Odvody has an accumulative grade point average of 3.95.
Debra Cardona, a senior from San Antonio with an accumulative grade point average of 3.4, received the George Coalson Memorial Scholarship. Money for this scholarship is donated by individuals in honor of the late Dr. George Coalson, who was a history professor and department chair.
Taft senior Donna Jean Weber, with an accumulative grade point average of 3.36, and Kingsville senior Debra A. Jones, with an accumulative grade point average of 3.84, each received a History Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships were established in memory of alumni and faculty.
Mario Cardenas, a history/political science graduate student from San Benito, received the W.A. Russell graduate scholarship. Cardenas has a 3.75 grade point average.
