A&M-KINGSVILLE HALLOWEEN COMEDY OFFERS >JOKES AND SPOOFS' TO SPARE
(KINGSVILLE, October 28, 1996) - What happens when "Louisiana Bob," a demented version of Hollywood's own Indiana Jones, takes center stage in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's upcoming Halloween horror, "The Mummy's Purse?"
The answer, according to Dr. David Deacon, A&M-Kingsville communications and theatre arts professor and writer of the play, is an "absolutely crazy" turn of events with plenty of "jokes and spoofs" to spare.
The "Mummy"s Purse," directed by Student Director Geoffrey Howard, is a spoof based on the famous 1931 black and white film, the "Mummy's Curse," and is, according to Deacon, "outrageous" in the tradition of last year's mega-hit, "Dracula Bites."
Performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31; Friday, Nov. 1; and Sunday, Nov. 3 in the Little Theatre; with a special midnight performance scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2. Admission is $3.
The comedy is the story of "Louisiana Bob," a defraught archeologist from Ohio State University, and his sidekick friend who runs a 7-11 in East Columbus, Ohio. Bob is hoping to get his job back at OSU by making a big discovery.
Together, the pair acquire a chest from Egypt and upon opening it, discover a mummy's purse. In the adventures that follow, the pair are cursed by "Adath" of the living dead, described by Deacon as "a bad guy with a thing for dusty purses." Adath and his mummy, "Pepi," abduct Bob's girlfriend and take her back to Egypt with the idea they will sacrifice her and take her back as an Egyptian princess to the underworld. Hilarious antics follow as Bob and sidekick get caught up in the ensuing chase.
The cast includes Eric Grant, Vanessa Chapa, Ronnie Garcia, Jesus Pantel, Martin Fox, Lucy Russell, Ignacio Ramirez III, Travis Springfield, Elias Benavides and Gilbert Jimenez.
"The Mummy's Purse" is the third play Howard, a senior theatre major from Carrizo Springs, has directed at A&M-Kingsville. He has also directed "Dracula Bites" and "California Suite," and has been the designer of numerous other productions. Deacon, beginning his 31st year with A&M-Kingsville, has written a number of plays over the years, including "Tales of the Wild Horse Desert."
