HALLOWEEN THEME TO TIE IN WITH THIS YEAR'S A&M-KINGSVILLE HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES
(KINGSVILLE, October 18, 1996) - Current Texas A&M University-Kingsville students will join alumni next week for few tricks and, hopefully, more treats during 1996 "Haunting Javelina" homecoming festivities, slated for Oct. 21 through Oct. 26.
The festivities will kick off Monday, Oct. 21, with a mud volleyball tournament and will end Saturday, Oct. 26, with football action featuring the Javelinas versus West Texas A&M University at Javelina Stadium (see schedule).
In addition to other familiar homecoming events such as homecoming parade, bonfire and pep rally, coordinators have included "Deck the Halls Dorm Exhibits" for the second year, a campus scavenger hunt and fall carnival, which will feature the live band, "Flying High."
Those who are artistically inclined may opt to take in the MasterCard ACTS Talent Show, while sporting enthusiasts will have their choice of running, testing their accuracy at the rifle range or honing their golf skills in a ROTC-sponsored golf tournament.
Homecoming would not be complete, however, without the coronation of a king and queen. Elections will take place during the week with final results announced during half-time at the Saturday evening football game.
Members of the fledgling Javelina Alumni Association view homecoming as an opportunity to connect with alumni and increase exposure.
"On behalf of the Javelina Alumni Association Board, we're willing to work very hard over the next year to really activate both the association and to reconnect with alumni out there,' said Carol Scott, president-elect of the association. "We hope that alumni will attend homecoming and will let us know where they are so that we can reestablish that connection."
The Javelina Alumni Association will host a Sunday morning brunch, open to alumni and anyone else interested in the association, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the home of A&M-Kingsville President Manuel Ibanez and his wife, Jane.
Cynthia K. Gilliam, vice president of Retail Customer Operations (RCO) of Nevada Power Company in Las Vegas, Nev. and a 1974 magna cum laude graduate of A&M-Kingsville (then Texas A&I University) will be introduced as the 1996 Distinguished Alumna. The official announcement and award presentation will be made immediately prior to the homecoming game.
Gilliam attended A&M-Kingsville from June 1971 to May 1974 while her husband, Calvin, was stationed at Naval Air Station Kingsville. While attending the university, she worked as a part-time secretary to the chairmen of the departments of General Business and Economics and Finance.
Following graduation, Gilliam joined Nevada Power Company as a rate analyst. She received a master of business administration degree in 1978 from the University of Nevada and in 1979 was promoted to rates administrator at Nevada Power.
She was eventually named to her current position as vice president of Retail Customer Operations in October 1993, where she is responsible for leading and directing the retail services of the company. The RCO division includes approximately 800 of Nevada Power's 1,800 employees.
A good education, having a positive attitude, selecting and developing an excellent staff and being lucky enough to have had great mentors are several key factors to which Gilliam attributes her success.
