'EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS' MUSEUM EXHIBIT OFFERS LOOK AT MEXICAN CULTURE

(KINGSVILLE, October 29, 1996) - "El Dia de los Muertos: Through the Eyes of Youth," an exhibit of offerings created by area high school students as part of the ,Todos Santos (All Saints) or El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Mexican holiday, will be on display in the West Gallery of the John E. Conner Museum until Nov. 8.

The exhibit, a repeat of last year's display, will include art work of area youth from H.M. King High School and Academy High School.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday with deep roots extending from Spanish folk Catholicism and pre-Hispanic beliefs. The event occurs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and is essentially -- despite its name -- a joyous private or family feast where the dead are welcomed back.

"This is a time of family reunion not only for the living but also the dead who, for a few brief hours each year, are believed to return to be with their relatives in the world," said Conner Museum Educator Brian Volkmer.

An important aspect of the celebration are the ofrendas (offerings), primarily made for specific individuals, most often relatives or friends. They often include the individual's favorite foods and drinks, photographs, candles and favorite objects.

Flowers, primarily the marigold, are frequently used as part of the display as it is believed their fragrance attracts the intended souls.

The purpose of the Conner exhibit, Volkmer said, is to teach students one aspect of the regional heritage and culture, and to give students the opportunity for public exhibition of their work.

This year, the museum's staff will also have an ofrenda to the museum's founder, John E. Conner, which will be in the museum's main lobby.
