AREA WOMEN INVITED TO AUDITION FOR SEVEN ROLES IN "TOP GIRLS"
(KINGSVILLE, October 8, 1996) - Aspiring to a life on the Broadway stage? Seven females are needed to fill roles in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's "Top Girls," a drama written by British feminist and playwright Caryl Churchill that delves into the lives of fictional and real women from history and reveals much about social and political issues surrounding women both past and present.
Auditions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14 and 15, and are open to everyone. No prior experience is necessary. Tryouts will be held in Room 123, the lab theatre, in the Drama Arts building at A&M-Kingsville. Rehearsals will be held evenings.
Play performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, 22 and 23; 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 21; and 2 p.m. on Nov. 24.
"Top Girls," directed by Communication and Theatre Arts Professor Dr. David Deacon, opens with a scene in a trendy London restaurant where five "top girls" taken from the pages of history and fiction are invited to dinner by Marlene, an attractive London executive and the story's protagonist.
After the opening restaurant scene, the women change into contemporary English women -- mothers, children and career girls -- who learn to cope with their new social roles, as well as new found freedoms and entrapments.
It is when Isabella Bird, Pope Joan, Lady Nijo, Dull Grete and Patient Griselda sit down to dinner, however, that the tone is set for the rest of the fascinating drama. For more information call (512) 593-3413.
