PARENTS' DAY ACTIVITIES SLATED

(KINGSVILLE, November 13, 1996) - Parents' Day at Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Friday, Nov. 9, will provide an opportunity for parents to visit the campus, learn about academic programs, meet faculty and staff, attend a football game and share the day with their offspring.

In conjunction with Parents' Day, the university will host an open house for parents and the community from 1 to 4 p.m. in Steinke Physical Education Center (SPEC) to showcase the many services and programs offered by the various colleges, departments and support services at the university.

"We hope that parents will take this opportunity to visit and learn more about A&M-Kingsville," said President Manuel Ibáñez. "We have some interesting programs and activities and we are excited about sharing them."

Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Frank Ureño said the official welcome and panel presentation in the morning is new this year and will feature a discussion of the university's future plans for academic programing, construction, and expansion of student services to meet the needs of a growing university. "We want parents to be well-informed about how the growth will affect their sons and daughters."

Other activities include walking tours, a pep rally and performance by the marching band, a block party, and a showcase featuring a nationally known magician-comedian as well as Mariachi Javelina and Texas A&M-Kingsville's Ballet Folklorico.

Visitors' parking passes will be issued at registration, which begins at 9 a.m. in Turner-Bishop Hall. Parking will be available across Santa Gertrudis Avenue from the Student Union Building (SUB) adjacent to Poteet and Cousins halls.

Reservation forms are available from the Office of Student Activities/Student Development on the third floor of the Student Union Building or by phoning (512) 593-2760. Reservations are due by Monday, Nov. 4, to Campus Box 133, Kingsville, TX 78363.

Tickets to the Javelinas football game against Abilene Christian University at 7 p.m. will be available at the Javelina Stadium ticket office or at the Parents' Day registration table in Turner-Bishop Hall. General admission is $5 and reserved seating is $8. Tickets may also be purchased with major credit cards by calling the stadium ticket office at (512)593-4030.

The A&M-Kingsville bookstore will be open for shopping from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers books, T-shirts and other souvenirs.

The day's events will be as follows:
9-10 a.m. Registration and a Continental breakfast to be held at Turner-Bishop Cafeteria
10-11 a.m. Welcome by President Ibáñez and a panel presentation on future plans by Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Robert Kirby, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Kay Clayton, and Vice President for Fiscal Affairs Steven H. Crandall.
11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Walking tours of Steinke Physical Education Center, John E. Conner Museum, and the research facilities of the Colleges of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Agriculture and Human Sciences
12:15-1:15 p.m. Luncheon will be prepared by Marriott Food Services; tickets for adults are $4 and children under 12 are free
1-4 p.m. University Open House in Steinke Physical Education Center (SPEC) will include exhibits about academic departments and services offered
1:30-2 p.m. Pep rally and marching band performance on the mall between the Student Union Building and the Biology Earth Science Building. For more information, call (512)593-803

5-6:15 p.m. Texas-style barbecue dinner sponsored by the Aggie Club in the Mesquite Grove; tickets for adults are $4 and children under 12 are $2
7 p.m. Football game in Javelina Stadium pits the Javelinas against Abilene Christian University.
