FALL COMMENCEMENT LAUNCHES 332 GRADUATES

(KINGSVILLE, December 20, 1996) -- Texas A&M University-Kingsville awarded 262 bachelor's degrees, 68 master's degrees and two doctorates at two separate commencement ceremonies held Friday, Dec. 13, in the university's Steinke Physical Education Center.

University officials split commencement into two separate ceremonies this year for the first time due in part to a larger graduating class combined with a slightly smaller seating capacity in the SPEC after its renovation last year.

Doctor of education degrees in educational leadership were awarded to Yvonne Duran, whose dissertation was titled, "Performance of School Board Members as Viewed by Board

Members and Superintendents"; and Lynn Marie Goeglein-Porter, whose dissertation was titled, "The Cost of Student Achievement as Related to Financial Variables." A third doctorate was awarded to Neva Terri Wilcox who received her degree at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Her dissertation was titled, "An Analysis of the Relationship Between the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills and Student Achievement."

Texas A&M University System Regent Donald E. Powell delivered the commencement address. He urged graduates to take chances in life.

"Do not be afraid to fail ... take a chance," Powell advised graduates. "We all need to cultivate an attitude of 'how can I help' instead of 'what's in it for me'. Giving means more than money. Giving means your time, your talents.

"Power through education," he added, "gives us an ability to see possibilities before they become obvious to the world."

Powell also recapped several strides A&M-Kingsville officials have made in the last few months in expanding the university's teaching and research programs, including receipt of a $3 million biomedical research grant from the National Institutes of Health, a new master's degree program in gerontology and a cooperative fund-raising effort between A&M-Kingsville and Spohn Kleberg Memorial Hospital to construct a $1.2 million rehabilitation and training facility on campus.
