Art Guys Bring Populist Take on Art to A&M-Kingsville Oct. 27-29
Exhibit at Ben Bailey Art Gallery Oct. 26-Nov. 19, reception Oct. 28

“Freebird (When You’re Smiling) from 101 of
the World’s Greatest Sculpture Proposals”
KINGSVILLE (October 15, 2009) — Who says art has to be a mysterious creation from on high? Certainly not The Art Guys, performance artists that lead off the new Presidential Performing and Visual Arts Series at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Described in the New York Times as “a cross between Dada and David Letterman, John Cage and the Smothers Brothers,” The Art Guys often use humor and everyday materials as a way to demystify art. The purpose? To welcome a broad range of audiences into the discourse of contemporary art.
Art Guys Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing began working together in 1983 after meeting while students at the University of Houston. Since that time, their work has been included in more than 150 exhibitions in museums, galleries and public spaces throughout the United States and in other parts of the world including Europe and China. Additionally, their work has been seen in more than 40 solo exhibitions.
The Art Guys will hold workshops at the Ben Bailey Art Building and the Ben Bailey Art Gallery Tuesday-Thursday, Oct. 27-29. Specific times for the workshops are as follows:
Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 27-28
Workshop starts: 9 a.m.-Noon
Lunch on your own: Noon-1 p.m.
Workshop continues: 1 p.m.-6 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 29
Workshop starts: 9 a.m.-Noon
Lunch on your own: Noon-1 p.m.
Workshop continues: 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
In addition, their exhibit “The Art Guys: Bag of Tricks” will be at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery, located on the A&M-Kingsville campus, Oct. 26-Nov. 19. A reception with the artists will be held at the gallery Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 7-10 p.m.
All of these events are free and open to the public.
The Art Guys come to Texas A&M-Kingville as part of the university’s Presidential Performing and Visual Arts Series. This is a year-long program of art, music, and theatre performances that bring culture and variety to Kingsville for faculty, staff, students and community audiences. The intention is to bring a new element to “learning outside the classroom” for students as they are entertained and educated in venues they might not normally visit. Community members are welcome to continue “life-long learning” by attending these events and interacting with our students.
