KINGSVILLE (April 21, 2009) — The South Texan newspaper and several Texas A&M University-Kingsville communications students won 27 awards and received third place in overall excellence in the student newspaper category at the 2009 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) competition in Dallas, April 9-11.
“These awards show that our students are competitive with the best collegiate journalism programs in Texas and that they are ready to continue their journalism careers at the next level,” said Dr. Manuel Flores, communications and theatre arts department chair and The South Texan adviser.
Texas A&M-Kingsville students ranked higher than any other school in the Texas A&M University System.
The competition features both live events, in which students from the more than 60 TIPA member schools compete against each other in timed, on-site contests, and previously published/broadcast events, in which work done over the last year is submitted and judged.
Juan Carlos Reyes, editor of The South Texan, and Jaime O. Gonzalez, managing editor of The South Texan, both placed in the live contest portion.
In total, students took home six first place awards, including recognition for Spanish news and feature writing, news photo, sports feature photo and general column.
Senior journalism major and The South Texan features editor Angela Palacios also received a $400 TIPA scholarship.
Started in 1909, TIPA is the oldest collegiate student press association in the nation.
Texas A&M University-Kingsville is classified as a TIPA Division 3 school. Some of the other schools in their division include Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Tarleton State, Texas A&M University-Commerce, West Texas A&M University, Midwestern State, Angelo State, Kilgore College, Texas Wesleyan, Trinity University, Sul Ross State University and the University of Dallas.
