Record Number of First Place
Student Press Awards for Texas A&M-Kingsville
University students win 22 total awards
KINGSVILLE (April 15, 2008) — Students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville won 22 total awards, including a school record nine first place awards, at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) competition, held at College Station April 3-5.
In addition to the nine first place awards, A&M-Kingsville received two second place awards, five third place awards and six honorable mentions.
Individual first place awards went to Angela Palacios in Feature Photo; Jaime Gonzalez for Sports Column; Dominique Garcia for Page One Design; Edwin Vasquez for Spanish Newswriting; Jeremy Martinez for On-Site Editorial Cartoon; Juan Carlos Reyes for On-Site TV Sports News; and Kirk Notarianni for Radio PSA.
Staff from The South Texan received first place awards in the categories of Special Edition for their piece “Javelina Crossing: A Survival Guide for Incoming Freshman and Upperclassmen,” and in Newspaper Single Subject Presentation for “A Powerful Vision: The Legacy of Irma Rangel.” In addition, the South Texan staff won a second place award in the category of In-Depth Reporting, and Honorable Mentions for Overall Excellence and Best of Show.
Dr. Manuel Flores, adviser for The South Texan and associate professor of journalism/ communication, said that the number of awards won—in particular, the number of first place awards won—illustrates the overall quality of work produced by the students.
“I’m very happy with our results. We were among 60 journalism programs that competed, and I think our results demonstrate that Texas A&M-Kingsville is very competitive with any program in the state.”
Started in 1909, TIPA is the oldest collegiate student press association in the nation.
Texas A&M University-Kingsville is classified as a TIPA Division 3 school. Some of the other schools in their division include Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Tarleton State, Texas A&M University-Commerce, West Texas A&M University, Midwestern State, Angelo State, Kilgore College, Texas Wesleyan, Trinity University, Sul Ross State University and the University of Dallas.
