Artwork from Oaxaca featured at Conner Museum

KINGSVILLE (Sept. 13, 2005) — The John E. Conner Museum at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will host Hecho en Oaxaca (Made in Oaxaca) in the west gallery from Thursday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 15. An opening reception will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit is part of the Hispanic Heritage Month activities at the university.

The show includes 20 works by contemporary Mexican printmakers. The works were created in three studios, La Chicatana, Bambu and Rafino Tamayo Taller, located in Oaxaca. The lithographs were printed on marble rather than the traditional Bavarian limestone.

The material for the exhibit was collected through the collaboration between Darin Forehand, assistant art professor, and the university art department through the A&M-Kingsville Summer Abroad International Program Exchange. It was curated by Forehand and Ana Canales, museum curator.

Following the exhibit at the Conner Museum, the works will travel to the University of Texas and the Museum of Print History in Houston for further showings.

The exhibit was made possible with help from the Hispanic Heritage Month committee, the university art department, and the Conner Museum.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information call 361-593-2810.
