Dr. Apurba Bhattacharya to speak alongside host of Nobel Laureates at international drug discovery conference in China Oct. 28-Nov. 1
KINGSVILLE (October 6, 2005) — Texas A&M University-Kingsville associate professor of chemistry Dr. Apurba Bhattacharya has been invited to speak at the Third Annual Congress of International Drug Discovery Science and Technology (IDDST), happening Oct. 28 through Nov. 1 in Shanghai and Dalian, China.
The conference, sponsored by the World High Technology Society (WHTS), serves as a culture-spanning meeting place for promoting innovations of drug discovery science and technology, which will cover both academic and industrial societies. Some of the hopes for the conference are that knowledge will be updated, and cutting-edge scientific outcomes and technology will be translated into industrial productivity for a new, healthier world.
Bhattacharya joins a list of distinguished conference speakers that includes six Nobel Laureates. Well known in the field of environmentally friendly green chemistry, he has taught at A&M-Kingsville since 1999. Prior to that, Bhattacharya worked for 18 years in the pharmaceutical industry, where he developed the synthesis of the drugs Propecia and Proscar.
“It’s a real honor for me and for the chemistry department to be a part of this internationally renowned conference,” said Bhattacharya.
The subjects of his talks are “Process Development of Finasteride; an alfa-reductase inhibitor: From Discovery to Development” and “Application of Green Technology in Pharmaceutical Process Development.”
Bhattacharya personally holds 26 patents, and led the research team that earned Texas A&M-Kingsville’s chemistry department its very first patent in 2004 for streamlining the production of acetaminophen, better known by the brand name Tylenol.
