KINGSVILLE (October 19, 2005) — Associate professor of art Santa Barraza was named 2005 Distinguished Researcher by the Javelina Alumni Association.

Barraza received her bachelor's degree in studio-painting and drawing from The University of Texas in 1975 and her master's in 1982.

A native of Kingsville, Barraza formerly taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at Penn State University at University Park.

Her artwork has been widely exhibited and her paintings hang in many private collections, including the University of California at Davis, the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, the Latino/Hispanic Design Archive at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, the Tomas Ybarra Frausto Collection in the Smithsonian Institution and the Fondo del Sol Visual Arts Center in Washington, D.C.

Among many awards received by Barraza are a Recognition Award for Contribution in the Arts, from National Chicanos in Higher Education; the Reader’s Digest-Lila Wallace Grant; the Professional Achievement Award from the Women of Color Association; and in 2001, the book Santa Barraza: Artist of the Borderlands received the Southwest Book Award from the Border Regional Library Association.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” said Barraza of receiving the award. “I feel very moved that my colleagues would recognize what I’ve done. I know that there are many others worthy of this award, so I’m very touched and honored to be getting it.”
