Marching band to give special exhibition performance at UIL State Marching Contest
KINGSVILLE (November 3, 2005) — The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Marching Band will offer an exhibition performance at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Texas State Marching Contest on Monday, Nov. 7, at 5:15 p.m., at San Antonio’s Alamodome.
They will be one of only a handful of university bands offering exhibition performances during the contest.
According to Texas A&M-Kingsville band director Alfredo Velez, an appearance at the UIL State Marching Contest means performing for several thousand students, parents, educators and guest judges from nationally respected universities and drum corps.
The band will present “Jazz Legends,” featuring the music of jazz great trumpeters Maynard Ferguson and Don Ellis, and the library of Stan Kenton. The performance includes “Conquistador,” arranged by Dennis Fisher and Scott Ward; and “Open Wide,” arranged by Roy Mitchell and featuring trumpet soloists Michael Acevedo, Robert Flores, Wille de la Cruz and Josh Partita. The show closes with a Scott Boerma arrangement of Bill Hollman’s “Malaga.”

The UIL State Marching Contest runs through Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The "Pride of South Texas" Marching Band, formed in 1925, performs at a variety of athletic events throughout the year and is often the featured exhibition group at numerous marching festivals.
Director of bands is Alfredo Vélez and assistant director of bands is Jeff Stone.
Percussion instructor is Randy Fluman, assisted by Mauricio Castellano. The Javelina Band’s visual design is by Chad Dempsey. Leading the band on the field are drum majors Lucio Gutierrez, Max Campuzano and Joseph Torrez. Color guard visual design is by Joe Hernandez. Guard Captain is Analisa Rodriguez. Drill technicians are A&M-Kingsville students Art Cano, Robert Flores, Eric Garza, Gonzalo Gonzales, Lucio Gutierrez, Gabriel Hernandez, Marisela Hernandez and Gus Villegas.
