Language and Literature department celebrate scholarship with a trip back to the 1920s
KINGSVILLE (November 17, 2005) — Faculty and students from the department of language and literature turned into flappers, gangsters and jazz age socialites for a night that celebrated scholarship.
The department recognizes winners of their scholarships with an annual event, complete with music and food presented in a unique theme. This year, that theme was the Roaring Twenties and was presented in Fore Hall’s Blue Room Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m.
Scholarship recipients honored included Christina Conway, English major from Rio Grande City, who received the Frances Alexander Scholarship and the Yvonne Duffy Scholarship; Ruth Dunn, English major from Corpus Christi, who received the Pauline Brown Scholarship and the Yvonne Duffy Scholarship; Eric Navarro, Spanish major from Laredo, who received the Schmalenbeck Scholarship; Uriel Rico, Spanish major from Kingsville, who received the Schmalenbeck Scholarship; and Nohemi Castillo, Spanish major from Mexico, who received the Larry Kruse Scholarship.
Language and literature faculty lending their celebratory expertise to the evening included Betti Tanner, Scott Rode, David Sabrio, Blakeney Richard, Cathy Downs, Jackie Acuff, Diana Borse, Lori Rios, Pamela Wright, Susan Roberson, Jacki Thomas, Ermine Hailey, Pilar Rus, Ruben Rodriguez-Jimenez, Michele Johnson-Vela, Roberto Vela and Wayne Gunn. Other participants included Sue Sabrio and Robert Scott.
