Four from A&M-Kingsville place in Pathways contest
KINGSVILLE (November 29, 2005) — Four students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville were among the winners at the third annual Texas A&M University System Pathways Student Research Symposium hosted in Kingsville Nov. 4-5. Over 360 researchers converged on campus with 287 student presentations presented.
The student research symposium is a spin-off of the Pathways to the Doctorate Program, which was developed to attract high achieving students within the System in order to produce some of the next generation of faculty.
In the graduate presentation division, Jason Estrella, tied for first with his paper Energy Budgets of
Female Northern Pintails Wintering Along the Texas Coast. Estrella is from George West and majoring in range and wildlife science.
In the undergraduate division, Juan Jose Moreno, a senior mathematics major from Roma, placed second. His faculty mentor is Dr. David Cecil. His presentation was entitled Using LEGO ®MINDSTORMS TM To Communicate Between Multiple RCX Units.
Alejandra Ortega and Veronica Jimenez both placed third in the undergraduate division. Ortega is a sophomore political science major from Kingsville. Her topic was To Keep Home and Be Silent: Correlates of Support for Women’s Equality. Jimenez is a junior chemistry major from Petronila. Her presentation, Analytical Method Development for Pharmaceutical Intermediates, was supervised by faculty mentors, Dr. Annette Farrell and Dr. Apurba Bhattacharya.
Jimenez and Moreno are members of the McNair Scholars Program at A&M-Kingsville.
A&M-Kingsville registered the most students with 75 graduate students and 34 undergraduates taking part in the symposium. In total, 113 undergraduates, 201 graduate students and 49 faculty members from around the System attended or presented at the symposium.
The Pathways Symposium is hosted by a different System school each year to provide opportunities for faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students in the program to meet their peers and to learn about one another's schools, resources, research activities and community outreach.
