Three weeks of original one act plays showcase student directing, writing and acting
KINGSVILLE (November 1, 2005) — In partial fulfillment of their course requirements for their “Directing for the Stage” class, student directors at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will present a One Act Play Festival throughout the month of November.
Performances will occur in the Little Theatre on the A&M-Kingsville campus on successive Mondays and Tuesdays – Nov. 7-8, 14-15 and 21-22 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3.
November 7-8 performances will feature three one act plays. The first is “Just a Coincidence,” written by senior A&M-Kingsville theatre major Lyn Sanchez from Kingsville and directed by senior theatre major Amanda Rodriguez from Odem. The cast includes Lyn Sanchez as Jasmine; freshman Ron Garza from San Antonio, as Omar; Sterling Hunter, a Kingsville junior, as Edward; Nick Casdillas, a Bishop sophomore, as Trent; Bishop senior Yvonne Jimenez as Lisa; and Kingsville junior Jaime Loera as Issac.
The second play is “And The Winner Is…” written by David Matthews Auburn and directed by Gabriel Villarreal, a junior theatre major from Falfurrias. The cast features Kingsville senior Krystal Seidel as Sally; Wimberly freshman Will Harrison as Sam; Zapata freshman Christina Garcia as April; Falfurrias sophomore Lindsay Ramos as Danielle; A&M-Kingsville graduate Melissa Scott of Flour Bluff as Pauline; Kingsville sophomore Felicia Morin as Rachel; and Kingsville junior Stephanie Wright as Tracy.
The final play of the evening will the celebrated one act “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez. It will be directed by junior theatre arts major Elisa Larralde from Hebronville. Featured in this play are Falfurrias sophomore Ric Saenz as Honest Sancho; Harlingen junior Lisa Marie Gonzalez as Ms Jimenez; Marcelo Arreola, a Boerne sophomore, as the revolutionary; the farm worker is played by Phillip Anderson, a Houston freshman; Johnny Pachuco is played by Juan Jose Garcia, a Mission senior; and Heraclio Gonzalez, a Kingsville sophomore, plays the Mexican American.
Stage Manager for these three productions are Christi Lopez, an Orange Grove junior, with lights by Driscoll junior Griselda Gonzalez and sound operation by Noe Saenz.
The November 14-15 performances feature three plays, which are “ Finding Sierra,” written by A&M-Kingsville junior Stephanie Wright and directed by Orange Grove junior Christi Lopez; “ Fair Rosamund and Her Murderer,” written by Don Nigro and directed by Benavides senior David Z. Gutierrez; and “ Sister, Sister,” written by Texas A&M-Kingsville junior Griselda Gonzalez of Driscoll and directed by Kingsville junior Melissa Moreno.
The cast of “ Finding Sierra” includes Griselda Gonzalez as Sierra; Falfurrias freshman James Taylor Maupin IV as James; and Phillip Anderson as Dray.
The cast of “ Fair Rosamund and Her Murderer” features Georgina Spelvin, a Houston junior, as Rosamund and Raymondville graduate student Michael Verderber as the Murderer.
In “ Sister, Sister,” Zapata freshman Cynthia Gutierrez plays Beatrice and Sandra is played by Sandra Jackson.
Stage manager for those three one acts is Falfurrias junior Gabriel Villarreal; light operator is sophomore Lisa Vela; and sound operator is Mary Alice Owen, a senior from Houston.
The final collection of one acts on Nov. 21-22 will feature four plays, including “ The Empty Track and Mr. Penson,” written by Kingsville senior Barry Berryhill and directed by Griselda Gonzalez; “ Photographs from S-21,” by Catherine Filoux and directed by La Feria junior Venessa Vargas; “ Waiting for Julia,” by George Freek and directed by Kingsville junior Stephanie Wright; and “ I Dream Before I Take the Stand,” by Arlene Hutton and directed by Falfurrias sophomore Lindsay Ramos.
“The Empty Track and Mr. Penson” features San Antonio senior Gabriel Ruiz as Mr. Penson; Melissa Scott as Amy; and Ric Saenz as Jonathan.
“Photographs From S-21” features Michael Verderber as the Young Man and Lyn Sanchez, Kingsville senior, as the Young Woman.
“Waiting For Julia” has Barry Berryhill playing Robert, the father; Christina Garcia as Ellen, the mother; Cynthia Gutierrez, a Zapata freshman, as Julia, the daughter; and Clayton Wimberly, a junior from Yoakum, as the boyfriend Peter.
“I Dream Before I Take the Stand” has Will Harrison as the lawyer and Laredo junior Lorraine Rodriguez as the Girl .
Stage Manager for these four one acts is Heraclio Gonzalez. Lights operator will be Kingsville junior O’Ryan White, and sound operator is Kingsville sophomore Felicia Morin
