Freshman Brandon Callis receives Olga R. Paul liberal arts scholarship

KINGSVILLE (July 21, 2005) — Brandon Callis will be entering Texas A&M University-Kingsville this fall as a freshman recipient of the Olga R. Paul Scholarship.

The scholarship provides $5,000 a year for up to four years to a worthy liberal arts candidate. One scholarship is available for each student class – freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. Academic year 2004-2005 was the first year for the scholarship, which is renewable for up to four years contingent upon continued performance in accord with minimum selection standards.

Callis graduated fourth in his Tuloso-Midway High School class and was part of the Distinguished Achievement Program, taking college level courses in English and calculus. He also completed college level Spanish and history courses conducted at Del Mar College.

Active in his high school vocal choir ensemble and UIL music contests, Callis will be transferring these skills to A&M-Kingsville as a music major. Callis also will be assuming a second major out of the realm of music completely – animal science.

The Olga R. Paul Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by alumnus and businessman Carl F. Paul in honor of his late mother, Olga R. Paul. She had earned both a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education and a master’s degree from then-Texas A&I University.

Applications for the scholarship should be submitted to the College of Arts and Sciences dean by February 15 each year. Scholarship awards will be made by May 1 for new students.
