South Texan student newspaper wins 12 awards at Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference

KINGSVILLE (April 13, 2005) — Student newspaper The South Texan and its staff made a strong showing at the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Conference in Dallas April 7-9, winning 12 awards, including four for first place.

That tops The South Texan’s 10 conference wins from last year.

Students from approximately 40 universities and colleges were in attendance. Among the activities was a live contest, where three South Texan staffers placed in three different events.

Adriana Tapia Garza of Corpus Christi, editor-in-chief, won second place in print news writing; managing editor Michelle Peters-Garcia of Odem took third place in television news writing; and assistant editor Miguel Pena of Kingsville won second place in radio news announcing.

In other competitions, Tapia Garza was a winner three times more for headline writing, placing first, and in general column and news feature writing, winning second place in both. Peters-Garcia also was a multiple winner, taking first place in feature page design.

Other student winners on The South Texan staff included entertainment editor Gabriel Cruz of Bishop, second place, editorial writing; Richard Garcia of Corpus Christi, honorable mention, feature page design; and DeWane Garrett II from Houston, honorable mention, sports column.

In addition, the entire South Texan staff received first place awards for ad design and sports page design.

Started in 1909, the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) is the oldest collegiate student press association in the nation.

Texas A&M University-Kingsville is classified as a TIPA Division 3 school. Some of the other schools in their division include Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Tarleton State, Texas A&M University-Commerce, West Texas A&M University, Midwestern State, Angelo State, Kilgore College, Texas Wesleyan, Trinity University, Sul Ross State University and the University of Dallas.
