KINGSVILLE (April 19, 2005) — The department of communications & theatre arts at Texas A&M University-Kingsville closes out its 2004-2005 theatre season with the classic Italian comedy
The Servant of Two Masters.
Performances take place at the Little Theatre Friday through Sunday, April 22-24, at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $3.
The play is suitable for all ages.
Written by Carlo Goldoni in the late 18 th century, the complex comical plot centers around a servant who gains the employment of two different noblepersons, one of whom is a woman dressed as a man, and the efforts it takes to appease them both.
Communications & theatre arts professor Dr. David Deacon continues his longstanding practice of directing the final production of the season. He’ll be revisiting a past work with
The Servant of Two Masters, a play he first staged for the university in 1966.
“The response to it was so favorable that I kept at the back of my mind a re-staging of this farce masterpiece,” said Deacon. “The twists and turns of Goldoni’s dizzying plot keep an audience constantly wondering what could possibly happen next.”
The only deviation Deacon made from the well honed source material is in dressing his cast in 19th century garb rather than 18th century clothes. Other than that, he said he has remained true to the classic story.
Assistant director and stage manager of the production is Orange Grove junior Jinelle Aguilar Henley. Costume designer is Cristina Suarez Machuca.
The cast is made up of:
Zapata junior Erica Benavides plays the part of the young noblewoman from Turin; Gabriel Villarreal, sophomore from Falfurrias, plays Silvio; Leslie Garcia, a senior from Zapata, plays the part of Clarice; Freshman Rick Saenz of Falfurrias plays Pantalone Dei Bisognoni; O’Ryan White, a junior from Kingsville, plays the part of Doctor Lombardi; Felicia Morin, a freshman from Kingsville, plays the part of Smeraldina; Tuffaldino is played by Raymondville senior Michael Verderber; Barry Berryhill, a senior from Kingsville, plays Florindo Aretusi; Felicia Castillo, a sophomore from Kingsville, plays the part of Brighella; senior Gabriel Ruiz of San Antonio plays the first porter; Taurino Garcia, a freshman from Kingsville, plays the second porter; Kingsville senior Paco Rosas Moreno plays the first waiter; and the second waiter is played by Ruben Rodriguez, a sophomore from Alice.
