Music Faculty Present Recital at Texas A&M University-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE (September 12, 2003) --- Dr. Jack Burt, associate professor of trumpet, and Jason Kwak, assistant professor of piano, will present a faculty recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, in the Frank C. Smith Recital Hall in the Bellamah Music Building. The recital will feature the music of Tartini, Enescu, Höhne, Broughton, Barber and Ewazen. Admission is free.

Burt is presently the principal trumpet of the Corpus Christi and Victoria Symphony Orchestras. Solo and recital appearances include performances with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Bach Festival, Victoria Symphony, the San Antonio Brass and the Arkady Music Festival in Bar Harbor, Maine. He has been a conductor at the Breckenridge Music Institute in Breckenridge, Colorado.

In addition to studies in Berlin, Germany, he has studied privately with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He has performed in Germany, the Netherlands, and also appeared throughout Mexico as a member of the Orquesta Filarmonica de la Ciudad de Mexico and the Orquesta Filarmonica de la UNAM.

He received his doctoral degree in trumpet from the University of Texas at Austin and holds a bachelor’s degree in musicology from Baldwin-Wallace College and a master’s degree in performance from the University of South Carolina.

Kwak joined the faculty at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 2002. He has received
top prize in many piano competitions including the Atlanta Music Society, Handok Piano Competition, Southern Keyboard Competition, the Atlanta Music Club and the Peter Petroff Piano Competition.

He has made numerous appearances throughout the country, including appearances with the Austin Philharmonic Orchestra, The University of Texas Wind Ensemble and Rocky Ridge Orchestra. Kwak has collaborated with many distinguished artists including mezzo-soprano Shin Ja Kim, pianists José Feghali and Nikolai Petrov and violinist Vincent Fritelli. He has given solo performances in many notable venues and festivals across the country, including performances at Tanglewood Music Festival and Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Kwak received his degrees in piano performance from Eastman School of Music and The University of Texas at Austin.
