Risk Management Topic of Presentation at TAMUK
 |
KINGSVILLE (February 12, 2002) Alcohol abuse, gambling, hazing,
risk management, lack of leadership and failure to uphold stated values
are all problems facing student organizations today. As past president
of the Association of Fraternity Advisors, Rick Barnes knows all too well
what it is like to deal with these issues.
Barnes will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in ballroom A of the
Student Union Building at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to discuss
these and other issues troubling student groups. Admission is free.
"Risk management is just a fancy term for keeping members and guests
safe," Barnes said.
"Words such as integrity, honor, duty, character and loyalty appear
in the oaths taken by members and the mission statements of the organizations."
Barnes said if students would just live their lives according to the values
they promised to uphold when they were initiated, student groups wouldn't
have such a bad reputation.
He has been involved professionally with higher education and student
organization issues for 18 years. He has been active in numerous professional
organizations in the field and currently serves on the board of directors
of the North American Interfraternity Conference.
This program is sponsored by the All Greek Council, Kappa Kappa Psi, campus
housing,
the dean of students, the office of student activities, life services
and wellness, athletics and special programs.
