Program Description: This study abroad course emphasizes service learning through project work with an orphanage foundation program with special emphasis on community development in poor, low-income countries. Haiti is ranked 20th among the world's poorest countries. Students will learn about Haiti's culture, social programs and the role of community development projects in addressing housing and poverty issues in Haiti. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a service learning project that allows students to assist with building a home for a local community family. Students will explore how community development, non-profit work and a commitment to improving wellbeing for the poorest Haitians can be applied to poor communities in the U.S. Community solutions like the building of homes and land acquisition are emphasized. |
