Javs Reaching Higher

Meet: Laura
Classification: Sophomore
Major:  Chemical Engineering
Hometown: Houston, Texas
High School: Jersey Village High School

I chose Texas A&M Kingsville because:
In deciding what college to attend after senior year, TAMUK ended being my choice because of the classroom setting.  The small classes offer more of a one-on-one interaction with your professors.  You get to really know them more than just the professor lecturing at the front of the room.  You are less intimidated to ask questions and be involved.  Kingsville also offered a different environment then I’m use to in Houston.  The small town atmosphere makes you fell comfortable where you’re at.

My Major:
Summer of 2008 I interned with a company in Houston, Omnia Technology, developing measurement applications for Engineering companies.  I was able to see the different environments engineers get to experience.  You never seem to get burnt out on one aspect because new systems and new problems are always presenting themselves.  The reason I chose Chemical Engineering was because I enjoy chemistry and solving problems of how things interact and react with each other.

How I study:
I take my courses all in the morning so that my afternoon is free after lunch to read or study, and that way my evenings are also free.  If I know a test is coming up in a harder course I will start reviewing a few days ahead.  It helps relieve a lot of the stress of a big test that I would have if I put studying off.  The best study habit in college so far is just being able to find a really secluded spot to study and have no distractions.

When I have free time you might catch me:
Painting.  I wouldn’t say I’m Picasso, but it’s something I love to do when I have the time and it is really relaxing.  Sketching, drawing, journaling, I love it all.  It’s a way I can look back on what I’ve done and where I’ve been in my life at that time, a way I get to know myself more.

The best advice I could give a future Javelina is:
Same advice I would give someone entering high school or any 4 year program, if you work hard coming into it you don’t have to play catch up later. Wherever you go, always make a positive first impression so that you can set a good representation of yourself and your ethics.  More opportunities will come your way and you feel a lot more confident and motivated in everything you do.
