The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Department of Music and Department of Communications and Theatre Arts will present the summer musical Once Upon a Mattress by Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer July 15-17 in the Little Theatre on the campus of A&M-Kingsville.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17. Tickets are $5.

Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic The Princess and the Pea involves royal courtship and comeuppance, and provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Once Upon a Mattress premiered in 1959 with Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred.  She later reprised the role in television adaptations in 1964 and 1972.

This production will include:

  • Michelle Flores from Alice as Princess Winnifred
  • Michael Mendez from Corpus Christi as Prince Dauntless
  • Vanessa Valdez from Coppell as Lady Larken
  • Lee Roy Ramirez from La Grulla as Sir Harry
  • Alexis Rodriguez from Odem as Queen Aggravain
  • Reno Castro from Seguin as The Jester
  • Joey Olivarez from Taft as The Minstrel
  • JD Escobar from Edinburg as The Wizard
  • Katherine Desiderio from Kingsville as The Nightingale
  • Ruben Herrera from Kingsville as King Sextimus

Kenneth D. Williams, A&M-Kingsville associate professor of music, is the music director and Corey Ranson, assistant professor of theatre, is the stage director and production designer. Costumes will be designed and created by Cristina Suárez-Machuca.
