Sea Turtle Expert and Alumna to Speak at Public Award Ceremony

The public is invited to attend the Academic Excellence Awards for Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Department of Biological and Health Sciences Friday, October 5 at 4 p.m. at Peacock Auditorium, in the Biology-Earth Science Building on the A&M-Kingsville campus

The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Donna Shaver, Chief of the Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery at Padre Island National Seashore. 

An alumna of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Shaver and her team have worked to establish and protect the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle on the Texas coast. She is also the Texas state coordinator for the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN), a national network that tracks sea turtle strandings. 

Shaver has received numerous awards for her work, most recently receiving the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sea Turtle Society. 

In addition to the keynote lecture from Dr. Donna Shaver, the Academic Excellence Awards will share the accolades of recent biological and health sciences scholarship recipients, commemorate past contributors to the department and encourage scientific discussions. 

Snacks and light refreshments will be available in the foyer of the Biology-Earth Science Building at 3:30 p.m. The building is located on campus at 920 N. University Blvd. in Kingsville.
