The students from the art, communications and theatre department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will present the play within a play comedy Noises Off in performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, March 20-22, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24. All performances are in The Little Theatre and admission is $5.

Noises Off is rated PG with mild language and adult situations.

Noises Off was written in 1982 by English playwright Michael Frayn, who got his idea while standing in the wings watching a performance of Chinamen, a farce he had written for Lynn Redgrave. According to Frayn, “It was funnier from behind than in front and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind.” He wrote a one-act play entitled Exits, which was written and performed in 1977. At the request of an associate, he expanded the play into Noises Off, taking its title from the theatrical stage direction indicating sounds that are meant to originate offstage.

Noises Off presents a manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and backstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.

The play is directed by Corey Ranson, assistant theatre professor.

Noises Off features the return to the A&M-Kingsville stage of Dr. David Deacon, professor emeritus, as a guest artist. Deacon was director of theatre at the university for 41 years. He has worked on about 350 productions—some professional—as an actor, director, designer and playwright. He will play the character Selsdon Mowbray in Noises Off.

Gage Roberts, a freshman theatre major from Kingsville, will portray Lloyd Dallas. He has been in Once upon a Mattress, Same as Sarah and ‘Dentity Crisis.

The part of Dotty Otley will be played by Megan Saenz, a senior theatre major from Alice. Saenz has previously been in Same as Sarah, A Tempest, Bethlehem, Once upon a Mattress and Blood Wedding.

Michael Mendez, a senior theatre and communications major from Corpus Christi, will play the part of Garry Lejeune. Mendez has been in Boys Next Door, Little Shop of Horrors, Godspell and Once upon a Mattress.

The part of Fredrick Fellowes will be played by Myles Martinez, a senior theatre major from San Antonio. He has previously been part of The Great Cross Country Race, Boxcar, I Hate Hamlet, Blood Wedding, Boys Next Door, Same as Sarah, Pillow Talk and Almost Maine.

Michelle Flores, a senior theatre major from Alice, plays the part of Belinda Blair. She has previously been seen in Savage in Limbo, Daughters, Little Shop of Horrors, Mama Drama, Wizard of Oz, Once upon a Mattress, Bethlehem, Dead Man’s Cellphone and I Hate Hamlet.
