Sharon Bridgforth, an acclaimed playwright, performer and activist, will serve as the featured performer at the 6th Texas A&M University-Kingsville Lucille Kruse Literary Reading.

Bridgforth’s performance will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 15 in the Blue Room of Sam Fore Hall on the A&M-Kingsville campus. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Bridgforth employs a variety of different media to convey her art and activism, including traditional African American art forms such as jazz, chant, prayer, poetry and dance. She will present Like Jazz—a staged reading of jazz/blues/prayer poems and performance stories during the Kruse Reading.

Dr. Cathy Downs, A&M-Kingsville professor of English, said Bridgforth’s presentation will present students and the Kingsville community with a special opportunity to witness a truly unique art form.

“Our students may not have observed art which, at the moment it’s made, binds the audience and the community together in common cause,” Downs said.

Bridgforth’s current work in-progress, River See, has received a 2012 MAP Fund Award and a 2012 National Performance Network Creation Fund Award. Her piece, blood pudding, was produced in the 2010 New York SummerStage Festival. Bridgforth served as the 2010-2012 Visiting Multicultural Faculty member at The Theatre School at DePaul University. Bridgforth is the author of love conjure/blues and the Lambda Literary Award-winning the bull-jean stories, RedBone Press. Bridgforth is author of Silk Mantras: Activating the Divine Design for Your Life; she is co-editor of Experiments in a Jazz Aesthetic: Art, Activism, Academia, and the Austin Project.

The 5th Lucille Kruse Literary Reader is sponsored by the A&M-Kingsville Department of Language and Literature, the Black Heritage Committee, the Office of Student Activities, the Office of the Dean of Students and Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Society and the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.
