Helena Maria Viramontes will serve as the guest reader during the 5th Annual Lucille Kruse Literary Reader Series at Texas A&M University-Kingsville Thursday, April 12.

The event has been made possible in part with a grant from the Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

A native of East Los Angeles and current professor of creative writing at Cornell University, Viramontes has authored such preeminent contributions to the Chicana literary genre as The Moths and Other Stories, Under the Feet of Jesus and Their Dogs Came with Them. Additionally, Viramontes has edited Chicana (W)rites: On Word and Film and Chicana Creativity and Criticism.

Viramontes will lead a discussion on Writing, Culture and Politics beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in room 212A in the Memorial Student Union Building. The Kruse Literary Reading will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Blue Room of Fore Hall later that day and will include Viramontes’ readings of her works. Her books will be for sale and she will be available for book signings. Both events are free and open to the public.

The recipient of numerous awards, including the USA Ford Fellow and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant, Viramontes has a bachelor’s degree from Immaculate Heart College and a master’s in fine arts from the University of California-Irvine.

“Viramontes is an author of great note. Her short story, ‘The Moths’ is widely anthologized, her novel Under the Feet of Jesus is widely taught, and she is invited to campuses worldwide to lecture on Mexican-American letters, civil rights, and the art of writing. Furthermore, her work has been the focus of scholarship concerned with Borderland/Frontera studies,” said Dr. Cathy Downs, professor of English.

Additional event sponsors include Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish Honor Society; the Department of Art, Communications and Theatre; the Department of Language and Literature; and the Office of the Dean of Students.
