For the third consecutive year, students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will spend one day barefoot for the One Day Without Shoes Walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 on University Boulevard, on the A&M-Kingsville campus.

The event is part of a national campaign to draw awareness to the plight of children across the globe who do not have shoes. It is sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a company that donates one pair of shoes to children in need for every pair purchased.

The student organization TOMS@TAMUK is sponsoring the event, which will also feature a musical performance from local artist Mathias Isassi. The university is encouraged to join in the barefoot walk, said Genesis Urbina, an A&M-Kingsville graduate student and event organizer.

“While thousands are going barefoot on April 10th, we must all remember that it is one thing to go without shoes for one day and it’s another to go without shoes your entire life,” Urbina said. “In many developing parts of the world, not having one pair of shoes determines if a child can get an education, puts a child in danger while traveling miles for a gallon of clean water, and exposes the child to harsh terrain, putting his or her life in danger. “
