University Lecturship Series Presents Naomi Wolf

Naomi Wolf – Author of international bestseller, The Beauty Myth –will be the featured guest speaker as part of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville University Lectureship Series at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Jones Auditorium.

Wolf will present “The Beauty Myth Revisited” - focusing on how images of beauty are still used against women. Her lecture will examine current cultural trends that affect women and men in different stages of their lives, from the mixed messages that are ingrained in young women about their beauty and sexuality and the psychologically and physically devastating “hooking up” culture on college campuses to obstacles that face couple looking to start a family. Wolf has given voice to women of all ages, exploding the social myths that keep women struggling in their fight for equality.

This event is free and open to the public.

Naomi Wolf’s landmark bestseller, The Beauty Myth, challenged the cosmetics industry and the marketing of unrealistic standards of beauty, launching a new wave of feminism in the early 1990’s. The New York Times called it one of the most important books of the 20th century.

Since graduating from Yale University, Wolf’s essays have appeared in various publications including: The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, Glamour, Ms., Esquire, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. Following her international bestseller, Naomi Wolfe followed that with Fire With Fire: The New Female Power and How It Will Change The 21st Century, Promiscuities: The Secret Struggle of Womanhood and Misconceptions, a powerful an passionate critique of pregnancy and birth in America.

Wolf is also co-founder of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership, an organization devoted to training young women in ethical leadership for the 21st century. The institute teaches professional development in the arts and media, politics and law, business and entrepreneurship as well as ethical decision making.
