         Jazz drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts will share his musical talents with student musicians from across South Texas during the Texas A&M University-Kingsville 45th Annual Jazz Festival Friday-Saturday, March 23-24.

         About 20 middle school and high school jazz bands will compete during the two-day program, and A&M-Kingsville jazz ensembles will perform concerts during the festival, including Jazz Bands I, II and II and the Latin Jazz ensemble.  

         Watts, one of the most sought-after jazz drummers in the world and a stand-out jazz composer, will conduct a Jazz Clinic for students on Saturday and perform during the festival’s closing concert at 7 p.m. Saturday in Jones Auditorium on the campus of A&M-Kingsville. Performing along with Watts will be the A&M-Kingsville Jazz Bands I and II.

About Jeff “Tain” Watts

          With an extensive discography that includes work in television and film, and innovative, powerful sound, Watts has worked with some of the leading jazz musicians in the nation. He studied jazz at Berklee School of Music, where he worked alongside standout musicians, including Kevin Eubanks, Aimee Mann and Steve Vai.

         He holds the distinction of being the only musician to appear on every Grammy Award-winning record by both jazz legends Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Additionally, Watts has worked with George Benson, Harry Connick Jr. Kenny Garrett, Alice Coltrane, Danilo Perez and Steve Coleman. Watts also spent three years playing in the Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

         In addition to his recordings as side-man, Watts has recorded six albums as band leader, including the 2009 WATTS, which he also produced.
