Transculturation
Welcome | Services | Monday Noon Seminars | Faculty Development | Teaching Awards | Transculturation | Sample Syllabus | Faculty Focus | TAMUK Home | The Transculturation Program, established in 1988 by Dr. Ward Albro and Dr. Rosario Torres-Raines, is designed to explore the history, culture, and language of our Hispanic student body (approximately 65% of our students) and of the surrounding South Texas community. The program was conceived to convey knowledge and a greater awareness of the origins of and contemporary issues facing the Mexican American community along the Texas-Mexico border. This, in turn, will better prepare the faculty and professional staff at TAMUK to meet the educational needs of our culturally diverse population. Involvement in the program includes a commitment to attend and participate in weekly seminars scheduled for Wednesday afternoons, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. These weekly seminars will address such subjects as Mexican American history, culture, language, learning styles, immigration waves, literature, art, and dance. The seminars feature outstanding Latino scholars from a variety of agencies, organizations and academic institutions throughout Texas. Additionally, those selected for participation must attend a two-week language-culture immersion experience in Cuernavaca, Mexico, immediately following the end of the spring semester. Faculty and professional staff new to the campus and region are especially encouraged to apply, but applications from anyone who has not yet attended will be considered. The selection process usually begins at the end of October.
